The city's largest employer in 2005 is Tyson Foods with over 3,700 employees. The one following is the Amarillo Independent School District with 3,659 employsees.
There is also the Cactus Feeders, an operation that is one of the world's largest cattle feedlot businesses. The Cactus Feeders have a capacity to contain over 520,000 head of cattle. Employees there own 32 percent of Cactus Feeders; the rest is owned by the Engler family who founded the operation.
The meat packing industry is a major employer in Amarillo; about one-quarter of the United States' beef supply is processed in the area. The city is also the location of headquarters for the Texas Cattle Feeders Association
About 14 million acres of agricultural land surrounds the city with corn, wheat, and cotton fields as the primary crops.
In the year 2000, the median income for a household in the city was $34,940, and the median income for a family was $42,536.
