The public, primary, and secondary education systems are primarily handled by the Amarillo Independent School District (AISD) and Canyon Independent School District(CISD). The AISD contains over 29,000 students, while CISD has over 8,000 students.
AISD handles 4 high schools, 9 middle schools, 36 elementary schools, a specialty high school, and an alternative school.
CISD has only 1 high school, 2 junior high/intermediate schools, and 4 elementary schools.
Other school districts involve River Road, Highland Park and Bushland Independent School Districts.
There are also Christian and nonreligious private schools in Amarillo. These include the Arbor Christian Academy, Holy Cross Catholic Academy, Amarillo Montessori Academy, San Jacinto Christian Academy, Bible Heritage Christian School, and St. Andrew's Episcopal SChool.
The universities in Amarillo include the Amarillo College, which is a two-year community college that has over 10,000 students. There is also the Wayland Baptist University, a private university that's based in Plainview, and has a branch campus in Amarillo.
Texas Tech university at Amarillo is a branch campus of Texas Tech University that offers selected master's degree programs. Finally, there is the West Texas A&M University in nearby Canyon and is the regional university in the Amarillo area, and the entire Texas Panhandle.
